Home Inspect is an independently developed iPhone app for sketching the inside of a home, its exterior walls and its fences. It is built so that your work stays yours: the app has no servers of its own and no account to make, and nothing you draw is ever sent to us.
Home Inspect is made and operated by Jason Crane, an individual developer in the United States, reachable at support@homeinspectapp.com. For the purposes of the GDPR and similar laws, that is the data controller for the small amount of information described below.
What the app stores, and where
- Your projects, sketches and photos: the rooms, walls and fences you draw, any room scans you take, the photos you add with their captions, and a home's address if you add one, are stored on your iPhone in the app's own private storage, which iOS encrypts whenever the phone is locked. Photos are kept at a reduced size, and their location and camera details are removed the moment they are added.
- Your iCloud: the same projects are kept in your own private iCloud database, tied to your Apple ID, so they appear on your other Apple devices and come back if you reinstall the app. Apple encrypts them in transit and at rest. Nobody else can read them, including us. They count against your iCloud storage. You can turn this off with Back up to iCloud in the app's Settings (your projects then stay only on your iPhone, and turning it back on catches iCloud up), by signing out of iCloud, or by turning the app off under iCloud in the iPhone's Settings.
- Settings: the app's own preferences (such as its light or dark look) are stored on your device.
What leaves your device
- Your projects, to your own iCloud, as described above.
- An address you type, to Apple Maps: if you add a home's address to a project, the letters you type in the address box go to Apple Maps to suggest matching addresses and place the home on the map. To show the home from above (on the project page, on the project's tile, and under a roof drawing when you turn its map on), the home's place on the map goes to Apple Maps for the picture; those pictures are never saved on your device. Apple handles all of this under its own privacy policy; we never see it. The address itself is saved with the project, in your iCloud like the rest.
- In a group, to the people in it, through iCloud: if you start a group or join one by its invitation, the projects you share with it stay in your own iCloud and are shared, through Apple's iCloud sharing, with everyone in the group, who can change them. Your name as you typed it shows to the group. You choose what's shared; taking a project out of the group, or leaving the group, stops it.
- Test versions only, when you tap Send: test versions of the app (TestFlight) have a "Beta: Send to Jay" button on the project page. Only when you tap it, it sends that project's room scans, drawings and the scanner's log, with the app, iOS and device versions, to the developer through Apple's iCloud, to improve the room scanner. It never sends photos, the address, or the project's or anyone's name. The App Store version has no such button.
- Whatever you choose to share: when you share a sheet, a photo or a PDF, it goes to the app or person you pick in the iPhone's share sheet, and nowhere else.
- Your purchase: subscriptions are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never see your payment details.
What we do not do
- No analytics, no advertising, no tracking of any kind.
- No third-party software development kits that collect data.
- No account, no email address, no password to create.
Camera and photos
The camera is used while you scan a room or an outside wall, to build its floor plan or its wall drawing (a scan keeps no video or photo), and when you take photos for a project. Photos you take or add are kept in the project only, on your iPhone and in your iCloud; they go into your photo library only if you tap Save to Photos or turn on Save new photos to the camera roll in the app's Settings, which asks your permission once. Photos you add from your library come through Apple's photo picker, so the app sees only the ones you choose.
Deleting your data
Delete All My Data in the app's Settings removes every project, with its sketches and photos, from your iPhone and from your iCloud. Deleting the app removes the copy on the phone; your iCloud copy stays until you remove it, in the app or under iCloud storage in the iPhone's Settings.
Children
Home Inspect is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them. It collects no personal information from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date.
